Learn introductory techniques in developing cyanotypes using the light of the sun to create unique artworks on paper or fabric.
Cyanotypes or ‘sunprints’ are made by laying an object on paper or fabric coated with a solution of iron salts before exposing it to light and washing with water to create stunning white and Prussian blue images. Explore this camera-less technique with artist Michelle Sound in the Rooftop Garden using plants and sunlight to create your own artworks.
All artistic skill levels welcome.
For ages 16+.
Limited to 12 participants
Fee: $5.00 + taxes. All materials provided.
Participants are welcome to bring their own plants or objects to add to their artwork.
About the Artist:
Michelle Sound is a Cree and Métis artist, educator, and mother. She is a member of Wapsewsipi Swan River First Nation in Northern Alberta. Her mother is Cree from Kinuso, Alberta, Treaty 8 territory and her father’s family is Métis from the Buffalo Lake Métis settlement in central Alberta, Treaty 6 territory. She was born and raised on the unceded and ancestral home territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm, Skwxwú7mesh, and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh Nations. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Simon Fraser University, School for the Contemporary Arts, and a Master of Applied Arts from Emily Carr University Art + Design.
Public art pieces include a utility box art wrap (City of Vancouver), street banners (City of New Westminster), a printed transit shelter mural, and a painted mural at Ociciwan Art Centre (Edmonton). Recent solo exhibitions include Neutral Ground ARC, Daphne Art Centre, Alternator, Gallery 101, Burrard Arts Foundation, grunt gallery, and Seymour Art Gallery. Her work has been featured in group exhibitions including Burnaby Art Gallery, Audain Art Museum, and the Nanaimo Art Gallery. She has been awarded grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the BC Arts Council and completed artist residencies at the Burrard Arts Foundation and Indigenous Arts Intensive at UBC Okanagan. Her artwork is in the collections of the Burnaby Art Gallery, Indigenous Art Centre, Forge Project, and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.

About the Rooftop Garden:
Richmond’s Rooftop Garden is located on the 2nd floor of the Richmond Library/Cultural Centre, open from April – October. It features a variety of floral and food plants maintained by the Richmond Garden Club, with a long picnic table to host small group workshops or events, and a big chess game for players of all ages.
