Join us in the Rooftop Garden to learn how to dye fabrics with plant and food waste!
This workshop combines two techniques: shibori and natural dyeing with plants. Shibori (絞 り) is a Japanese manual resist dyeing technique, which produces a number of different patterns on fabric. Learn some basic ways of tying, pinching and folding fabrics using rubber bands, clamps, pegs, and string, to create a one-of-a-kind cotton bandana.
The workshop also explores the beauty of natural colour using plants. Teaching how to extract pigments from plants or food waste to make a dye bath, dye your own shibori-bandanas with 2 or 3 colours of choice, made from plants or food waste such as spices, flowers, and vegetable skins.
All materials provided. For ages 19+.
Fee: $5.00 + taxes
Limited to 12 participants
About the Artist:
Fernanda Mascarenhas is a textile artist, natural dyer, dance performer, and longtime Zen-Buddhist practitioner from Brazil. When she was developing a costume for her performance work, she discovered the textile world and fell irrevocably in love with natural dyeing. This costume won a prize, which enabled her to travel to Japan to learn more about this technique. Engaging with the slow process of natural dyeing in urban areas and with locally grown plants, she has respected the cycles of nature while intending to reclaim the ancestral power of plants, such as their medicinal use. Besides teaching, Fernanda has run a studio to create one-of-a-kind textile pieces. She also writes the Plants and Colours blog to share her passions and experiences.
