Zodiac Crossroads presents a collection of two-dimensional tactile artworks that explore the intersection of culture, accessibility, and sensory experience. Drawing inspiration from the mythologies of ancient civilizations such as those of China, Greece, Sumer, and the Mayan people, as well as elements of popular culture, Johnny Tai reimagines the Chinese zodiac and Western astrology through the lens of his personal experiences as an immigrant with disabilities.
Using raised etchings on aluminum that enable a non-visual appreciation of shapes and forms, Tai creates a rich constellation of cultural symbolism that resonates across time and generations. Collaborating with exhibition designer and preparator Kay Slater, the artist has framed each piece to meet the aesthetic expectations of sighted viewers, while removing the glass to allow tactile interaction. This approach aligns with Tai’s belief that art should be accessible to all, embodying the motto: “Don’t just look, but feel.”
This exhibition also reflects the artist’s broader commitment to advocacy and community-building, informed by his experience teaching self-defense workshops for the blind. Ultimately, Zodiac Crossroads invites audiences to reimagine how art can connect people across cultural and sensory boundaries, enriching conversations on inclusivity, perception, and belonging.
