The September Artist Salon session features exhibiting artist Vanessa Brown who will discuss her work in the fields of sculpture, video and installation. She looks at how the trajectory of her practice has come to encompass different media over time, from metal to video to collage. She also discusses how living both here and abroad has affected her work, how access to facilities dictates what is possible in terms of production, and lastly the role artists can play for each other in terms of collaboration, opportunity and exchange.
This edition of the Artist Salon was an online live-streamed event with Q&A from online participants.
Hosted by Kathy Tycholis, RAG Education & Public Programs Coordinator.
About the Artist:
Vanessa Brown works primarily in sculpture and installation. The root of her work draws from various sources including landscapes, craft, feminized labour, gestures of comfort, ideas of escape, and liminal spaces such as holes and dreams. She has exhibited in Canada, Germany, Luxembourg, the USA, and Mexico, notably with solo and two-person exhibitions at Patel Brown, Toronto; The Esker Foundation, Calgary; Arsenal, Toronto; Projet Pangée, Montreal; The Western Front, Vancouver; The Armory Show, New York. She is represented by Patel Brown.
The Artist Salon is an opportunity for emerging and established visual artists to learn from arts professionals and discuss opportunities in the arts community. Each month presents a different guest presenter for inspirational talks and professional development advice for visual artists.
Past live sessions from 2020 onwards are recorded and may be viewed online at the RAG@Home Artist Salon videos.
Program is supported by the City of Richmond Arts and Culture grant.
