Vistas of Solitude brings together the works of Sam Kaplan and Marion Webber, two artists who explore the serene beauty of nature through distinct landscapes. Their work evokes a sense of solitude and the profound connection between humans and the natural environment.

Kaplan’s acrylic landscapes reflect a lifelong relationship with nature, shaped by childhood experiences on the North Shore and Bowen Island. Rich in texture and color, their depictions of snow-covered peaks, tranquil woods, and still lakes highlight moments of intimate solitude. Webber’s Sky Cathedrals series captures the ever-changing beauty of West Coast skies through expansive cloudscapes. Drawing on years of cloud studies through plein air sketches and photographs, Webber’s works balance bold, statuesque forms with intricate details.

Together, Kaplan and Webber honour the magnificence and fragility of the natural world. Vistas of Solitude offers the possibility for escape and contemplation, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the landscapes represented, and to (re)connect with their own surroundings, while reflecting on the need to preserve these landscapes for future generations.

    Biography

Sam Kaplan (they/them) is a queer, non-binary artist and uninvited settler on the unceded homelands of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Peoples. A self-described art school drop-out and mess-maker, Sam explores the intersections of paint, ink, embroidery, weaving, and clay.

Born in Ontario in 1953, Marion Webber was immersed in art from an early age, influenced by a creative family with a deep passion for art collecting. She holds a BFA from the University of Victoria and a Design Arts diploma from Grant MacEwan College. With a career in publication, photography, design, and communication spanning over 35 years, Webber maintains a practice in graphite, oil pastel, and oil paint.
