Ingrid Koivukangas

The Finn Slough Project

March 9 - April 15, 2007

Ingrid Koivukangas, a first generation Finnish-Canadian environmental artist, works in response to natural sites—wilderness, rural and urban—creating gallery installations and site-specific ephemeral works that are unique to each area.

In Richmond she will be working at Finn Slough; a heritage area that has undergone very little ecological change over the past century.   Koivukangas will be consulting with the residents of that small, unique community and working in response to the location’s geographic placement on the Fraser River.

Her research will include an exploration of the history of the area including geographic, botanical, animal and human histories. The culmination of her activity in Finn Slough will be documented and presented in the Gallery space in an interactive, mixed media installation.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Ingrid Koivukangas, a Vancouver-based environmental artist, received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Okanagan University College, Kelowna, BC in 1999 and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Calgary in 2002. She has had solo exhibitions, and taught workshops on environmental art, across Canada, USA, Finland, Spain and Costa Rica (2007), as well as numerous group exhibitions.
The annual Art About Finn Slough sponsored by the RAG is organized by the same community members who will be collaborating with Ingrid Koivukangas, and it will open in the Cultural Centre Lecture Hall on the same evening as this exhibition from 7 – 9pm.
