“Is there a felicity in the world superior to this?” asks Marianne, the enthusiastic romantic second Dashwood sister from Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. This line, spoken during a countryside walk, reflects Marianne’s sincere affection for the pure joys of nature.
This collection of works by Alex Ji纪钧译 reflects a similar profound appreciation for the natural environment. His paintings emphasize an idyllic atmosphere, skillfully showcasing light, colour, and thoughtful mark-making. Ji’s expansive compositions provide viewers with an inviting glimpse into lush gardens and vast landscapes, even as he predominantly works with moderately sized canvases. His artworks evoke a sense of romanticism and encourage contemplation, akin to the effects of leisurely strolls along a quiet countryside, rivers or amber-lit beaches. These works were selected in conversation with Gateway Theatre’s staging of Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen’s second novel which was published in 1813.
Alex Ji纪钧译 is an art educator, and an accomplished painter. He immigrated to Canada in 2022, and soon after, established art studios in Richmond and West Vancouver. Ji is a recipient of multiple painting awards in China, the United States, and Canada. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Painting and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts and has been teaching painting since 2009.
The Gateway Theatre is located at 6500 Gilbert Road, Richmond, BC V7C 3V4.
The exhibition is open to the public during performance times.
