    Flights of Serendipity

    January 9 - March 9, 2026

In Flights of Serendipity, Mitchell Seeyu invites viewers into a world where fleeting encounters with nature and culture are captured through fluid washes of colour and soft tonal transitions. Drawing inspiration from memories of Hong Kong and everyday moments in Vancouver—migratory birds mid-song, playful goldfish beneath blossoms, leaves turning golden with the seasons, lion dances in the snow during Lunar New Year—Seeyu conjures a dreamlike harmony between spontaneity and intention, capturing the quiet beauty of impermanence.

Seeyu draws on the expressive aesthetics of the Lingnan School of Chinese ink painting. Emerging in southern China in the late 19th century, the Lingnan School is known for its synthesis of traditional brushwork with modern, often Western-influenced sensibilities—marked by vibrant colours, evocative atmospheres, and sensitivity to negative space. Seeyu’s work is particularly attuned to the mogu (boneless) technique, which eschews contour lines in favour of subtle tonal gradations. Rendered on xuan paper with nuanced brushwork and atmospheric layering, her paintings create lyrical impressions that bridge memory and place, reflecting a life attuned to the serendipitous rhythms of nature.
