Reflecting on the question “If trees had tears, what would they look like?” Vancouver based artist Craig Sibley fabricates sculptural forms from the stained wood of the Mountain Pine tree. The work addresses Sibley’s concern with the Pine Beetle Epidemic currently ravaging BC’s Central and Northern Interior forests. This body of work is inspired by the artists’ relationship to the natural environment and particularly the Forest. This relationship considers trees and all things in the natural world connected, sentient and capable of feeling. He sees his works as giving form and voice to what most consider a silent epidemic. Sibley constructs his ambiguous, metaphoric sculptures using traditional furniture and boatbuilding methods and also utilizes environmental conditions to leave their mark on the works as they are being created.
