Looking for services to support and develop your art practice? Wondering how artists get paid to show their work? What are the legal and economic rights of visual artists in Canada? Where can an artist find a supportive creative community?

CARFAC, or Canadian Artists’ Representation/Le Front des Artistes Canadiens is a national non-profit organization that advocates for Canada’s visual artists. Current CARFAC BC President, Trevor Van den Eijinden, will provide an overview of the many resources they offer for artists including current guidelines in contractual issues, artist fees and legal rights.

Bring along your questions and join in the discussion on strategies for artists at all stages in their careers to further their practice and discover creative opportunities in BC.

    Session Format:

    • Session will be hosted as a livestream on the Zoom platform. Pre-registration is required to join.
    • Join the conversation using the Zoom Chat and Q+A features.
    • Automated English captions included.

    About the Presenter:
Van den Eijnden (they/them, he/him) is a visual artist, and educator born in Nova Scotia and currently living in Vancouver, British Columbia. He received two simultaneous undergraduate degrees in 2005—a BA from Dalhousie University and a BFA from NSCAD University—that have both had an impact on his practice. In 2015 he completed a Master of Visual Art from Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Having a lifelong interest in education, he has worked as faculty, department head, and academic director at several private and public institutions in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. His practice as an artist usually coalesces around time, grief, and nature, while as an educator he focuses on research, history, and cross-media concept-focused production.

    About CARFAC BC:
CARFAC BC is the collective voice for professional artists in British Columbia advocating for artists’ legal rights, and offering practical advice and skill development to support the professional practices of cultural producers.

Since 1990, CARFAC BC functions as a volunteer organization on behalf of its membership. CARFAC BC receives no operational funding. It functions on the resources of its members alone, and is primarily run by volunteers and an active Board of Directors. Together, we have the strength to make fair contracts and payments of proper fees the norm, to tackle the illegal reproduction of artists’ work, and lobby for tax reform, among other critical issues. With over twenty-five thousand artists in British Columbia, we hold tremendous untapped power to change the conditions in which we live and work.

The Artist Salon Series features art professionals leading inspirational artist talks and professional development for visual artists each month from February to November. Programs are either live-streamed via the Zoom platform or hosted in person. Past livestreams may be viewed as videos on the RAG@Home video page.
