Combining technical precision with contemplative lyricism, artist Zhong Liu’s landscape photographs explore the delicate balance between permanence and transformation. Captured across British Columbia, Alberta, and Antarctica, his images transfigure mountains, forests, water, and sky into studies of space, light, and the passage of time. Faced with these vast landscapes, Liu reflects on nature’s majesty and humanity’s relative insignificance.

Guided by the principals of straight photography—an approach that values clarity, sharp focus, and minimal manipulation—Liu works with natural light to emphasize the authenticity of the image as a result of direct observation. Working in black and white, he reveals the subtle interplay of light, form, and shadow, accentuating tonal variations within the landscape. Deeply influenced by American landscape photographer and environmentalist Ansel Adams (b.1902–d.1984), Liu draws from the Zone System, a method Adams developed to carefully control exposure and contrast across eleven tonal zones, from deep shadow to bright light.

These works employ long exposure, allowing light and motion to register the passage of time. As the movements of clouds and water dissolve in the process, Liu transforms dynamic scenes into contemplative compositions that move beyond specific sites toward the experience of being immersed in nature—circulation of air, traces of light, and the fading of boundaries between forms. As Liu reflects, “These images inhabit a state between stillness and movement. Through them, I seek to evoke the delicate emotional state when immersed in the grandeur of nature.”
