Magic Tofu

I discovered this recipe after visiting Fresh in Toronto way back in the early 2000s. It was the first dish that really hero'd tofu and changed my vegetarianism. Ever since then this has been something I make at holidays for a really comforting, umami-bomb protein.

Ingredients

There are two parts – the tofu itself, and the coating.

Marinated Tofu Steaks:
1 block firm tofu
2 tbsp coriander, ground
4 tsp garlic powder
½ cup tamari
2 cups filtered water

Crispy Tofu Coating:
1 cup flaked nutritional yeast
½ cup wheat germ
1 tbsp garlic powder
¼ tsp sea salt
¼ tsp black pepper

Instructions

Marinated Tofu Steaks:
1. Cut the block of tofu into 4-1/4-in. thick slices, then cut the slices diagonally into triangles
2. Combine the coriander, garlic, tamari and water in a bowl, mix well. Pour marinade over tofu triangles.
3. Marinate for at least 1 hour.

Crispy Tofu Coating and Frying:
1. Mix coating ingredients in a wide and shallow bowl.
2. Heat the oil over med heat.
3. Dredge Marinated Tofu Steaks in coating until fully coated
4. Cook tofu steaks in the pan for 2 minutes per side or until browned. Set aside.
