Brushstrokes of Life presents a selection of Chinese ink brush paintings by local artist Tina Tom. Tom draws her inspiration from her surroundings, such as her own garden and other natural scenes, blending personal experiences with imagination. Following the rich tradition of flower-and-bird painting that dates back to the Six Dynasties (220-589), these dynamic works invite viewers into a world where every brushstroke conveys a sense of emotion and purpose. They showcase Tom’s unique interpretation of the precision of gongbi–a painting technique known for its meticulous and realistic portrayal of subjects–and the spontaneity of xieyi–a freer, more expressive approach emphasizing the artist’s subjectivity and creativity.
Reflecting Tom’s ongoing artistic exploration, the exhibition also includes landscape paintings influenced by the styles of Qi Baishi and Xu Wei. Tom’s first solo exhibition highlights her profound connection to the natural world, bringing to life the expressive brushstrokes, intricate details, and vibrant colours that define her style. As Tom explains, “Flowers bloom and wither, saplings grow into trees, and time passes–only through painting can these fleeting moments be expressed and remembered.”
