Art at Work: Managing Artist Estates

April 14, 2019

Art At Work is a series of professional development workshops for working artists and creative professionals presented by Richmond Art Gallery, Richmond Public Art Program and CARFAC BC.

In the 50 years since the deaths of artists Frances Loring and Florence Wyle many attempts have been made to fulfill their final wishes to create The Sculpture Fund, an acquisition fund to support the purchase of Canadian sculpture.

Looking through the lens of research into their lives, work and estates, Amy Nugent presents her findings, including what was missing from the Will, archives, management of work and documentation along the way, and how she arrived at the plan to realize The Sculpture Fund.

Teresa Sudeyko, the registrar at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, will walk through some of the lessons learned from Frances and Florence and from her experience working with museum collections and artist archives. Teresa will discuss documentation, preservation and labeling among other key elements of organizing one’s artwork and archive.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Amy Nugent is a Vancouver-based cultural worker and resource developer. As the former president of Artspeak’s board, she has been recognized with a 2016 Mayor’s Arts Award from the City of Vancouver. Her own research over the past five years has focused on the history and restitution of sculptors Frances Loring (1887–1968) and Florence Wyle (1881–1968), the current state of Canadian art collections and the limited acquisition funds to support them.

Teresa Sudeyko has been the Registrar at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery since 2008 and an independent art appraiser since 2013. She also works with private collectors to organize and document their collections. Teresa has a Master’s of Library and Information Studies from UBC (2008) and a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from York University (2005).
