Join us on Saturday, March 28th at 2:00 PM for an artist talk with Richmond Art Gallery’s current artist in residence, Tokyo-based artist, Yusuke Shibata.
Moderator: Makiko Hara, Co-Curator of Ongoing Pacific Crossings exhibition
Shibata’s practice—spanning video, photography, and performance interrogates the blurred space between truth and fabrication. Fresh from his recent projects in Tokyo and Oita, Shibata will discuss his “poetic yet interventionist” approach to artmaking. Yusuke is visiting Richmond to prepare for his upcoming exhibition: Ongoing Pacific Crossings this summer with the Ongoing Collective at the RAG. While in Richmond, he is researching Japanese-Canadian/Asian immigrant experience and the recent increase in Japanese students completing working holidays/English study programs in Canada.
Yusuke Shibata is based in Tokyo and participated Artist in Residency programs in Korea, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Argentina and Canada. His recent exhibitions and projects include Encounter ‒ Kaikō Beppu or Ongoing ‒ at HOYOUJYO Ongoing, Oita, 2026, Daitaiya II at Salon de Zuppa, Tokyo, 2025, Koganecho Bazaar 2024 ‒ A Solitary Emotion ‒ at Hachibankan, Kanagawa, 2024, New Authentic at ya-gins, Gunma, 2023, and PROMOTION, WORLD! at Art Center Ongoing, Tokyo, 2020.
Yusuke Shibata’s Artist in Residency is co-organized with Ongoing Association and supported by Toshiaki Ogasawara Memorial Foundation.
