Tides Within brings together Richmond-based artists Fanny BokYin Tang and Debra Zhou, whose practices share a deep desire to harmonize inner freedom with the rhythms of the natural world. Tang’s surreal seascapes reflect on environmental fragility and Buddhist teachings, blending playful marine life with symbolic coral forms. Zhou’s abstract watercolour landscapes are rooted in her experience of pregnancy and early motherhood, evoking the resonance between the creation of life and the cosmos beyond. Using water as a central metaphor for connection and impermanence, both artists offer introspective visual languages shaped by the aesthetics of Chinese ink brush painting.

Biography

Fanny BokYin Tang was born on the island of Nauru in the Central Pacific, and holds a BFA in oil painting from the University of Calgary and an MFA in fresco painting from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. After working in Hong Kong, she moved to Vancouver, where she now lives and maintains a studio in Richmond. Tang’s work blends poured acrylic sheets shaped into swimming sea creatures, integrating marine and sky elements into mythical dreamscapes. Through this unique technique, she creates layered worlds where realism and surrealism coexist. Tang has exhibited widely in Beijing, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the United States, and Canada.

Debra Zhou is a Richmond-based artist whose creative journey began in Shanghai, where the blend of Eastern and Western influences shaped her artistic lens. After moving to Canada at 18, she pursued a degree in Psychology, while continuing to nurture her passion for art. With nearly two decades of experience in the local arts and culture sector, Zhou brings a deep sensitivity to her artistic practice. Her abstract, landscape-like watercolour works draw from traditional Chinese ink painting and explore themes of nature, the cosmos, perception, and the subconscious.
