    The Artist Salon Series returns in 2024!
    Join us for this in-person artist talk and hands-on art-making social.

    Exhibiting artist Yaimel López Zaldívar will introduce his practice as an artist and graphic designer, followed by a hands-on making session inspired by his works. Learn more about his artistic journey from Cuba to Canada, and how the intersecting experiences of Cuban and Canadian life has enabled him to expand his approach to art-making.

    Following the artist’s visual presentation, participants will experiment with  simple monotype printmaking techniques using a printing press.  By painting and drawing on the monotype plates, participants can develop layered one-of-a-kind prints. All materials provided.

    Registration is required. In-person session is not recommended for those under 16 years of age.

    The first hour of this session will be recorded as a video for later viewing.

    Format:

    Seating limited to 24 participants. Registration is required.

    1:00 – 2:00 pm:

    • Artist visual presentation recorded in the Gallery’s Program Room, followed by Q+A. Participants are advised to view the artist’s work in the gallery prior to the talk.

    2:00 – 4:00 pm:

    • The artist will lead a demonstration on developing monoprints using a press. All materials and equipment will be provided.
    • All inks will be soy-oil based and can be cleaned with soap and water, but be prepared for mess and wear appropriate clothing.

    About the Artist:
    Yaimel López Zaldívar is a Cuban multi-media artist based in Canada. His work encompasses experimental animation, print media, graphic design and illustration. Since 2019, he is based in Vancouver, where he has worked as an artist, graphic designer, and educator. As an artist, he has collaborated with various local organizations, including the Vancouver Latin-American Film Festival (VLAFF), Vancouver Latin-American Cultural Center (VLACC), and Vancouver Foundation. He has been involved in many exhibitions, most recently in the triennial Vancouver Special: Disorientations and echo at the Vancouver Art Gallery. His work has been published in books and magazines, and is now part of the Burnaby Art Gallery’s Permanent Collection.


    The Artist Salon is an opportunity for emerging and established visual artists to learn from arts professionals and discuss opportunities in the arts community. Each month presents a different guest presenter for inspirational talks and professional development advice for visual artists.
