The RAG will partner with the Gulf of Georgia Cannery to present Salmon Stock, a site specific installation by Judy Williams. This work was previously installed at the Goose Bay Cannery in Rivers Inlet and is being reconfigured for the Boiler House Theatre at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery. These once active canneries are exactly the right location for an artwork which seeks to insert questions of diminishing salmon stocks, their renewal and rehabilitation into a historical context. The once functioning cannery equipment and the nearby fishing docks juxtaposed to the museum displays and to Judy Williams’ installation, suggest that viewers probe not only the ‘how’ of the fishing industry, but also the ‘why’ of its transformation.
Salmon Stock will be installed at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery opening on B.C.Rivers Day, Sunday, September 28 and continuing through to Sunday, October 5,inclusive. Opening day activities include ongoing entertainment andrefreshments, and a Roundtable Discussion at 1pm.
At the RAG, Judy Williams will present documents of field work from a salmon enhancement project at Refuge Cove, BC, documents of the previous installation of Salmon Stock in Goose Bay, and other artifacts which will make reference to the installation at that Cannery.
