Richmond Art Gallery Announces New Director

Thursday, October 13, 2016

The City of Richmond and the Board of Directors for the Richmond Art Gallery Association are pleased to announce Shaun Dacey as the new director of the Richmond Art Gallery, effective October 24, 2016.

Dacey is leaving his position as curator at the Contemporary Art Gallery of Vancouver where he has, since 2013, planned and held responsibility for a diverse program of exhibitions, educational and off-site projects with particular focus on the residencies and outreach with artists based at the CAG Burrard Marina Field House Studio.

Previous positions include Director/Curator of Access Gallery, Public Programmer at the Burnaby Art Gallery, and Youth Programmes Coordinator at Oakville Galleries. He holds an MA in Critical and Curatorial Studies from the University of British Columbia and has additional experience as a writer and producer of exhibitions and public projects for spaces in Vancouver and Toronto including the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery and InterAccess Media Arts Centre.

“It is an honour to lead the Richmond Art Gallery, where we have a unique opportunity to engage urgent social, cultural, and political dialogues important within an emergent city such as Richmond,” says Dacey. “This is an exciting moment to develop programming within and beyond our physical gallery space, connecting to the city’s diverse and international communities.”

Rachel Rosenfield Lafo, the Richmond Art Gallery’s current director, is moving to Portland, Oregon, returning to the city where she worked years ago as associate curator at the Portland Art Museum. Her last day is Friday, October 14, opening night of the gallery’s new exhibition, Cultural Conflation featuring work by Diyan Achjadi and Shawn Hunt.

The Richmond Art Gallery is the City of Richmond’s Public Art Gallery. The Gallery is owned by the City of Richmond and is supported by the Richmond Art Gallery Association. The Richmond Art Gallery plays a dynamic role in the growth of visual art in Richmond, and is a vital part of the contemporary art network in British Columbia and Canada. Through excellence in exhibitions and education the Richmond Art Gallery strives to enhance an understanding and enjoyment of contemporary art. The art gallery features exhibitions of regional, national and international contemporary works of art.

The Richmond Art Gallery gratefully acknowledges the on-going support of the City of Richmond, the Richmond Art Gallery Association, the British Columbia Arts Council, and the Province of British Columbia, as well as other sponsors and funders.
