Photography, whether still or animated, is Richmond-based artist Ya-Wei Lin’s preferred medium for narrating the world, including daily activities, life experiences, events, and moments as she sees them. Since 2010, her ongoing photographic practice has focused on exploring the meaning of visibility in the context of urban culture. These images depict the fleeting and subtle moments of the seemingly unchanging cityscape, such as the geometric shapes of the many high-rise buildings and urban dwellers’ routine social behavior. These visual details might seem mundane, but to her, they possess an alluring quality that can evoke feelings of nostalgia, familiarity, and even the surge of excitement associated with being in a big city for the first time. Invisibility presents photographs taken from 2010 to 2024 in Berlin, Chiayi, Copenhagen, Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Kaohsiung, London, Los Angeles, Milan, New York, Richmond, Taipei, Tokyo, and Vancouver.
Ya-Wei Lin was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and moved to Richmond with her family in 1997. As an observational photographer, her usual go-to gear is Fujifilm X System and occasionally 35mm cameras. Her creative practice involves daily observations, walks with her camera, and travels.
