Gyudon (Japanese Beef Bowl)

My friend made this dish for me when we went on a trip to the East Coast during reading break. I now make it anytime I crave a hearty comforting meal.


1 onion
¾ lb thinly sliced beef

1 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp mirin
2 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsp sake (optional)


Cook sliced onion over medium heat with neutral cooking oil until tender. Add meat and sauce ingredients. Cook until beef is no longer pink. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Serve on rice with a fried egg and garnish with sesame seeds.
