Open Conversations explores the collaborative art practice of Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge. For over three decades, Condé and Beveridge have defined their photo-based art practice around the facilitation of dialogue among diverse communities and networks, exploring the concept of dialogue as a form of socially engaged art practice. This exhibition is guest-curated by Scott Marsden and includes a new work by the artists focusing on “cultural work” – specifically working with staff of the various cultural agencies within the Richmond Cultural Centre.

The earlier work of the Toronto-based pair was grounded in the conceptual art movement of the late 1960s. By the late ’70s their art focused on social issues, explored through a process that allowed their subjects to become participants in the work. Over the course of their creative collaboration they have had over 50 solo exhibitions nationally and internationally in public spaces, art galleries and museums, as well as projects for non-art sites such as union halls, billboards and bus shelters. They are active in several labour arts initiatives including the Mayworks Festival in Toronto and the Workers Arts and Heritage Centre in Hamilton, Ontario.

The Richmond Art Gallery exhibition will be their first solo exhibition in Western Canada.
