The Joy of Seeing presents a selection of realistic and semi-abstract watercolour, oil, and acrylic paintings created between 2020 and 2022 by Joselito Macapagal. It showcases scenes from the Richmond and Greater Vancouver area, as well as from Macapagal’s travels in Mexico and the Philippines.

Macapagal believes that painting is first and foremost a feast for the eyes, celebrating colours, textures, lines, and shapes that cumulatively create a captivating composition. Drawing inspiration from nature, places, and people, Macapagal creates works in an impressionistic style that evoke feelings of calm and joy through his use of colours and brushstrokes. His work captures fleeting yet memorable moments from his everyday life and travels: pre-storm clouds at Macdonald Beach, the distinctive nipa hut in the Philippines, or a steaming churro cart in Mexico.

Using painting as a form of mediation and storytelling, Macapagal invites the audience into a world where he shares his deep appreciation of finding beauty in nature and people. He then translates this beauty into paintings that ground us in the present moment and appeal to the senses.
