    About the Artists

Jaspal Birdi (B.1988, Toronto) is a Canadian artist who combines photography and painting by experimenting with contemporary technologies. Birdi’s interests explore how concepts of reality and virtuality influence accepted norms of freedom and security. Through programming, print, and paint, her practice filters and reconstructs a blurred cycle of virtual and physical actions. Birdi completed her BFA in Drawing and Painting from OCAD University 2010, a Museum Internship at The Peggy Guggenheim Collection 2011, a Masters in Arts Management from Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) 2013, and a Specialization in Curating Contemporary Art from Venice School of Curatorial Studies 2016.

Faune Ybarra’s project touches on her eagerness to find a sense of belonging as a diasporic artist. She was born between Oaxaca and Mexico City, and then moved to St. John’s for four years before moving to Vancouver where she now resides and works. In the process of developing her project, she coined the term “diasporic gestures”, which she describes as “actions to ground oneself to the currently inhabited land”. She holds a BFA in Visual Arts from Memorial University of Newfoundland and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Studies from Simon Fraser University.

Amy Ching-Yan Lam is an artist and writer. She makes exhibitions, performances, and public artworks. She was part of the duo Life of a Craphead from 2006 to 2020. Lam has presented work at Eastside Projects, Seoul MediaCity Biennale, the Western Front, Centre Clark, and numerous other venues, and has participated in residencies at the Macdowell and Delfina Foundations. Her first full-length collection of poetry, Baby Book, is forthcoming from Brick Books in April 2023. She was born in Hong Kong and lives in Toronto, which is Mississauga Anishinaabeg treaty territory.  Amylam.me

HaeAhn Woo Kwon is an installation artist. Informed by vernacular architecture in the urban environment of South Korea, her practice recombines and transforms disparate objects and means of production, reflecting on the availability of excess goods and the necessity of inventiveness in our current moment. She often collaborates with Paul Kajander as Haeahn Paul Kwon Kajander. She is an Assistant Professor at NSCAD University and represented by Franz Kaka Gallery in Tkaronto. She lives in Kjipuktuk, known as Halifax. Haeahnpaulkwonkajander.info

    About the Curator

Maria Filipina Palad lives and works in the lower mainland of BC and holds an MA from Simon Fraser University (2020), where her essay was nominated for the Western Association of Graduate Schools & ProQuest Distinguished Masters Thesis. She also holds a Masters in Arts Management from the Istituto Europeo di Design in Florence and Rome, Italy (2014). Her curatorial projects have been exhibited in Vancouver, and Manila, Philippines.

Presented in partnership with the Capture Festival, City of Richmond Public Art and the Canada Line Public Art Program.
