Red TEXT Black

March 7 - April 4, 2002

The Red TEXT Black series began a few years ago as an exploration of the original Surrealist game known as Le Cadavre Exquis (exquisite corpse). The purpose of the game was in keeping with the Surrealist manifesto of bringing together disparate objects.

My exploration began by collecting words and phrases from groups of people and randomly putting them together. Starting from the phrases I had gathered, I began to introduce themes expressing my own interests in power, gender politics and sensuality.

The combination of wit, sarcasm and serious concern that defines Ricarda McDonald are visible in the work.
