Winifred Wan-Chun Yu Lee

June 1 - July 9, 2000

Birds and flowers are her main objects, though her occasional landscape paintings are powerful. Looming throughout her words is the theme of a “free mind”.   Being free-minded is being free of the desire for possessions and begets no greed.

In her artistic creations, using her own way of artistic representation, Winifred caugh the inspiration of Gu Kai-zhi’s “Qian xiang miao de, yi xing xie shen,” that is, before using the brush, study the object carefully and tehn think and imagine until you arrest insight; represent the spirit resenting the spirit in the mind. Zhang Wen-tong (active in late Tang dynasty) states: “Following the universe without, arrest the spirit of mind within.”
