This short art history course will examine a selection of exceptional pictures created over the past 1000 years. Most people are familiar with iconic paintings like DaVinci’s “Mona Lisa” or Van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” but have you ever looked carefully at them? What historical forces helped shape these images, how do they function as art, and what can they tell us about the human experience?
Registration required for each session, limited spaces.

The Middle Ages (or medieval period) describes European history between the fall of Rome in 476 CE and the beginning of the Renaissance in the 14th century. View some of the artworks made during this time period, and learn about the role that art played in peoples lives—from larger-than-life murals in Romanesque cathedrals to intimate drawings in the margins of decorated manuscripts.

Saturday, April 6 – Renaissance Art: Why So Many Nudes? SOLD OUT
Why are there so many nudes in European art? The answer lies in the Italian Renaissance and the revival of ancient Greco-Roman tradition. We will examine this ancient tradition, it’s Renaissance revival, and how depicting images of naked human bodies became standard procedure in European art.

What does it take to shock a 19th century Parisian in an art gallery? Find out as we take a look at some paintings from the earliest days of Modern Art, examine the historical context that helped shape them, and consider why they were so shocking.

Presenters:
Sean Alward, MFA (UBC) is an artist and art educator. He has taught at the University of British Columbia, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Emily Carr University, and the Vancouver Film School. He has also written about art for publications including Canadian Art, C magazine, and Border Crossings.
Vanessa Sorenson, MA in Art History (UBC) is an creative arts professional focusing in Arts Administration and has a history of curating and writing about exhibitions. Her interest in art and art history from the Medieval period through to the 20th century is informed by her previous studies in continental philosophy.
