Join us for the Opening Reception of two solo exhibitions, Cindy Mochizuki : Cave to Dream and Jon Sasaki : We First Need a Boat for the Rising Tide to Lift Us.
Artists will be in attendance. Free admission, everyone welcome to attend.
Cindy Mochizuki’s Cave to Dream brings together speculative fiction, experimental cinema, ritual, magic, and live-performance storytelling. Mochizuki’s distinctive handwork is evident in the spirited and tender ink and wash drawings that form the animated imagery in the films. Small-scale theatrical sets, masks and porcelain game pieces crafted by the artist for the performance expand her aesthetic expression into three-dimensional space.
Jon Sasaki’s We First Need a Boat for the Rising Tide to Lift Us features documentation and ephemera of the artist’s performance in Steveston during the 2019 Richmond Maritime Festival. Waist deep in water and equipped with only rudimentary material and tools, Sasaki attempts to build a functioning boat that would allow him to extricate himself and paddle to shore. As boat building in the water presents far more challenges that boat building on dry land there is always a strong possibility the performance will end in failure.
