Richmond Art Gallery Association and Cinevolution Media Arts Society presents the BC premiere screening of Voices in the Clouds, an award-winning documentary of one man’s quest to understand his cultural heritage.  Come join a guided tour of the gallery exhibitions by Wen-Li Chen and Xiaojing Yan, followed by the film screening and panel discussion.
Panel discussion to be moderated by Yun-Jou Chang, Vice President of Cinevolution Media Arts Society and featuring panelists, Gu Xiong, multidisciplinary artist from China, and Godfre Leung, Centre A Curator.

Free admission, everyone welcome to attend.

About the film:

Voices in the Clouds is an intimate look at one man’s search for the spirit of his late mother through the discovery and exploration of his Indigenous roots. Through his journey the audience will become well-acquainted with and emotionally connected to the Indigenous people and cultures of Taiwan. ‘Voices’ celebrates the importance of family, and illustrates the personal richness and fulfillment that is born from being intimately connected to one’s ethnic heritage and culture.

顾雄 (Gu Xiong)
多媒介藝術家及UBC藝術史、視覺藝術理論教授

Gu Xiong (BFA, MFA, Sichuan Institute of Fine Arts) is a multidisciplinary artist from China who has lived in Canada since the late 1980s. Gu Xiong’s practice centers on the creation of a hybrid identity arising from the integration of different cultural origins. He has exhibited nationally and internationally including more than forty solo exhibitions and three public art commissions. He has participated in over one hundred prominent national and international group exhibitions including Beyond Image (Hubei Museum of Art, Wuhan, China 2015), the 55 Venice Biennale Parallel Exhibition Voice of the Unseen, Chinese Independent Art 1979–Today (Venice, 2013) and Border Zones: New Art Across Cultures (Museum of Anthropology, Vancouver, 2010). His work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the China National Museum of Fine Arts, and the Vancouver Art Gallery, among many other museums and private collections.

Godfre Leung
Curator, Centre A 藝術策展人
Godfre Leung is curator at Centre A. His criticism has recently appeared in Art in AmericaCanadian Art, and Yishu: Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art, among other magazines. He has also written for publications by institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, Walker Art Center, and most recently the exhibition catalogue Tuan Andrew Nguyen: Empty Forest, published by The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre in Ho Chi Minh City. His programming work includes Pausa: Barbara Held and Benton C Bainbridge at Kiehle Gallery and International Pop at the Walker, which traveled to the Dallas Art Museum and Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Yun-Jou Chang, Cinevolution Media Arts Society現任副總統
Yun-Jou Chang is currently Chair of the Board at Cinevolution, a grassroots organization at the intersection of arts, community and academia, committed to exploring migrant narratives and fostering intercultural dialogue through film and media arts. Since 2012, she has worked with a passionate team of artists, curators and community organizers to conceptualize, research, and develop a diverse range of artistic and community programs including: Your Kontinent: International Film and Media Arts Festival, DocuAsia Forum, Digital Carnival, You(th)+Me(dia) Day, Media Cafe, Underwater Chinatown, Art Talking Women, The Voice of the River, and Beyond Spectacle. Rooted in grassroots organizing, with a background in literature and social sciences, Yun-Jou is powerfully drawn to language, poetics, the stories that we tell, and how they inform our ability to connect with one another, form groups and build community.

劇情簡介:

眾族同聲是從家族與文化保存的核心議題,隨著東尼一起進行對自身文化的探索。母親死後,東尼與台灣親戚團圓,發現他的家族源自於一個特殊原住民文化的泰雅部落。然而,泰雅族和台灣其他原住民族文化都面臨了生死存亡的關頭。在這趟旅程中,與不同的人物會面帶給東尼很大的收穫。每一個新發現都為自己、弟弟和妻子開啟一扇發現台灣原住民族歷史、掙扎和獨特之美的窗。
