Elizabeth MacKenzie’s artistic research has considered representations of maternity, the female body as well as the human face. Reunion continues her investigation into the play of memory on an image of her mother. In this installation, MacKenzie works with a single photograph of her mother, taken when her mother was approximately the same age as the artist is now. MacKenzie redraws this image repeatedly; each representing a gestural and intuitive response to the photo. The result is a flickering portrait of an ambiguous face that shifts and dissolves from one image to the next.
MacKenzie’s mother died more than ten years ago, and these drawings represent a way of calling forth memories of her and her presence. “As I move through my middle age, the same period of life that I best remember her, I become increasingly aware of my own mortality and gain new insights into her life and death.”
Elizabeth MacKenzie, a Vancouver artist, has been exhibiting drawings, installations and video work since 1980. In addition to her many solo gallery exhibitions, she has worked collaboratively with numerous artists and most recently, with writer and critic Jeanne Randolph.
