Vancouver-based artist, Lilian Broca’s work focuses on the human condition, particularly as it relates to women. Over the past 10 years Broca has been exploring and creating work in series based on Biblical female figures, Lilith and Queen Esther. She has also devoted a series to brides, to which Pre-Nuptial Dialogue belongs. Brides is an earlier series that uses fairytale themes to bring new meaning to traditional ideas associated with the bride and the marriage ceremony. In Pre-Nuptial Dialogue the artist is acknowledging various symbolic interpretations of the raven, particularly the raven as trickster. The bird is advising the bride on her on the choices she is making about her marriage and her future. The artist uses the lithographic technique to enhance the intensity of the scene, using a dramatic light source to show the darker side of humanity. Lilian Broca earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Concordia University, Montreal in 1968 and went on to receive a Master of Fine Art from Pratt Institute, New York in 1971. The Vancouver-based artist’s career spans over three decades and she has exhibited across Canada, Europe and in the United States. Her work is held in several collections including the Vancouver Art Gallery, Frye Art Museum, Seattle and Concordia University, Montreal.
