Happy fisherman are from left to right: Robert Lum, George Pissarra, Richard Toda

On October 25, 2008, a team of five including Roger Keating and Roeland Zwaag from the City of Richmond caught the "Fish of a Lifetime" just outside Mission BC. This sturgeon was measured at 11' 0.5" and estimated at over 100 years old and 800 lbs. At one point during the fight, the sturgeon dragged the boat and crew, over 5,000 lbs, 100 metres upstream. The sturgeon was micro chipped and released back into the Fraser River.

This happened not too long ago, just at the end of last season. I hooked
up with Richard and we were targeting Chum on this day in Richard's
special secret location. This secret spot has been hot over last couple
weeks and over the years, the season was ending so we thought give it
one more try, for a nice fishy work out. Got there in the morning, great
little boat ride to our destination, typical beautiful day on the water.
We were both fishing from the boat and we landed a couple, but things
were a little slow. So I asked Richard to take me to the beach and I
would fish from there and Richard would head out up river a bit to fish
from the boat, this way we cover more area.
Couple hours later I thought I felt a hit on my rod, so I yanked the rod
trying to set the hook & to my amazement there was something heavy on
the end of my line. As I was reeling it in, my rod was bent like a horse
shoe, but it was still retreating. Thoughts just started rushing through
my head, what could it be ?? I thought maybe a dead sturgeon or a dead
seal or something ... Then I remembered all the running shoes being
washed up on the shores lately and my heart started to pound !! I kept
reeling till finally I seen something ... What the heck ... Looked like
a rope. I layed my rod down on the beach and started pulling in this
rope ... My heart is still pounding ... Not knowing what was under the
water but it was heavy. Well finally, after some effort I landed a
beautiful silver 15 - 20 pound .... Anchor .... LOL were we surprised !
