Join us for a celebration of Indigenous Arts and Culture, presented in partnership with Connections Community Services Centre and the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society.  This annual event, held at the historic Cannery in Steveston, is a celebration timed with National Indigenous Peoples Day and the summer solstice (June 21). Performances, story-telling, workshops, demos, food, and activities for all ages will be presented both indoors and outdoors at the national historic site from 12noon to 4pm.

This event features a showcase of Musqueum artist Cole Sparrow’s photography, hosted in collaboration between the Richmond Art Gallery and the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society. Sparrow’s work will be projected in the Boiler House Theatre throughout the event.

About the project by Cole Sparrow:

“Our traditions help continue the fight to survive, so does our culture, and these young men play a major role as to how that will work. Gathering as a group in a place of our oppression, this is the first step in finding that identity and self-acceptance of who we are. Through adversity, we will clear our own path in society, searching for those that want to help, and those that do understand our value. I personally know every one of these young men, and they have all had their own different experience in society, whether they have adapted or not, the struggle still stands.  This photo series represents the position that my culture is in. Within the youth, it is our job to embrace what was left for us to nurture and to stand up for what has been done to our ancestors. Together as one. It is the teachings of our ancestors that will guide us through this struggle and we will be the ones determining our future.”

While some of the regalia worn with pride in the photographs were created by Cole, others were made by his family members Robyn and Debra Sparrow and Wendy Grant and other spinners and weavers and who have worked to regenerate their own tradition of Coast Salish weaving within their Nation. Cole creative directed this important photo series along with photographer and friend Cam Corrado in his home community, with many of his young male relatives at the Musqueam Reserve acting as models.

Cole Sparrow is an emerging artist and fashion designer born and raised on Musqueam territory at the mouth of the Fraser River, on the Musqueam Indian Reserve.
