Blue Field II

January 17 - February 20, 2003

Blue Field II is a site related installation built on location, in this case, a column in the middle of the gallery spanning from floor to ceiling. The format and structure of Blue Field changes depending on where it is located. The work attempts to break away from the idea of sculpture as an object by creating more of a sculptural field. The scale range of items and colour used are intentionally limited; there is no focal point, no hierarchy of forms or objects; an all-over pattern or field is created. By filling a portion of the gallery with this installation, the walls, ceiling and floor become a framing device.

The materials are those one would find at hand or in an odds and ends basket: objects that might have little value or that appear to be useless. These casual materials are easily recognizable and readily available but are arranged in slightly out-of-context situations— e.g. plastic leaves have blue sequined fabric stapled to them or a silk rose has its stem wrapped in electrical tape. Things have an ad hoc feel to them; things are held together with tape, bobby pins, clothes pins, yarn, etc. Things in Blue Field II are chaotic and orderly, trashy and beautiful, ordinary and fantastical. Recognizable objects and materials become transformed structures pushing the imaginative possibility of the everyday, of the banal and the ordinary. The work takes on a fragile, ephemeral quality.
