All Our Children

June 15 - August 13, 2000

This audio-visual installation documents a moment in the transition from youth to adult as seen in the life-size painted (oil on canvas) representations of 40 girls between the ages of 13 and 17. The paintings are accompanied by audio recordings of monologues from interviews with the girls prepared by Elizabeth Courtney. Each girl selected her clothing and pose, and settled into her posture and expression. “Folded arms, hidden hands, cradled hands, feet, hips, gaze…all eloquent testimony to the triumphs and dislocations of their lives.”

Nicola Wheston was born in London, England in 1953. She studied at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art in Oxford, England, and at NSCAD. She had been exhibiting in England and Canada since 1973.
