Hello friends!
It's another busy month at the Richmond Art
Gallery.
We are in the midst of transforming the Gallery for
In Transition: New Art
from India, which we are presenting in
collaboration with the Vancouver Biennale. In
Transition features the work of six
of India's hottest art makers - Shilpa Gupta, Reena
Kallat, TV Santhosh, Sudarshan Shetty, artist
collective Thukral & Tagra, and
Hema Upadhyay. Vancouver writer/curator Keith
Wallace has drawn on his depth of experience
working with Indian artists and
writing about the contemporary art scene,
contributing
a clear-sighted overview of the state of the arts in
India
for the exhibition
brochure. In the meantime Nan Capogna, our
tireless
Public Programs Coordinator, has been busy
organizing fun and interesting
events, and we have teamed up with Kala Utsav
(an
evening of classical Indian arts to benefit global
relief)
and the New Asia Film
Festival events happening in May.
The exhibition will open on May 1, at which point
Hema Upadhyay will begin working on a site-
specific
piece for the Richmond
show. The exhibition's opening reception will be a
lively event with food and music, taking place on
Saturday, May 1 from 1-3 pm
(mark your calendars!) as the official launch event
of
the Doors Open Richmond
weekend.
Be sure to check out Sylvia Wong & Jing
Jia,
Urban Copy at the Gateway Theatre until April 27.
We
also have our Annual
General Meeting coming up on Tuesday, April 20,
and
as if that wasn't enough the Lulu Series: Art in the
City, is presenting Hema
Upadhyay on May 20 at Richmond Council
Chambers. As always, there's much to do - see
you at
the Gallery.

In Transition: New Art from India
Shilpa Gupta, Reena Kallat, TV Santhosh,
Sudarshan
Shetty, Thukral & Tagra, and Hema Upadhyay
In collaboration with the Vancouver
Biennale the
Richmond Art Gallery will present In Transition:
New
Art from India. India is
experiencing a period of remarkable growth and
transformation and its artists (like contemporary
artists
everywhere) are responding to
these changes. With an eye on its past and a
view to
the future, these artists are examining the social,
political, economic and religious
implications of becoming a major world economy.
The
exhibition will feature installation-based work by
six of
India's most recognized
contemporary artists: Shilpa Gupta, Reena Kallat,
TV
Santhosh, Sudarshan Shetty, artist collective
Thukral
& Tagra, and Hema
Upadhyay.

Sylvia Wong and Jing Jia, Urban Copy
March 16 - April 27
Gateway Theatre
ARTISTS' STATEMENT | Our installation project
Urban
Copy will serve as
a vehicle for us to address China's new attitude
towards internationalism. It will focus on the
uncertainty of China's future and the rapid
transformations that are taking place within China's
historical landscape. It questions China's
militaristic
economy and the sacrifices being made by China
in
the early stages of urbanization. The printmaking
process also serves as a metaphor and questions
the
issues modern China's factory workers are facing
today, and most importantly their sense of lost
identity.
Our mission is to have individuals gain a better
understanding about historical interconnectedness
of
people and ideas throughout the world, and to gain
new perspectives and awareness on contemporary
globalization.

City Hall
In 1997 Gillian Lindsay made the transition
from
film producer
to fine art photographer. She has been exploring
abstraction, producing work that is more about
texture, colour
and composition and less about
representational subject matter.
