City of Vancouver - Request for Ideas - Platforms 2010

The Public Art Program invites artists to propose artworks for 2-D platforms within the City of Vancouver to be presented during 2011, the City's anniversary year. The platforms include transit shelter ad space, video screens and a large photographic work. Proposed artwork must be newly created for the platform commission. The artist will supply a high-quality digital file of the work and the City will be responsible for the cost of production and installation.

Are you a passionate and creative individual with amazing interpersonal skills? Do you have the vision and drive to help shape the future of one of Canada’s important public galleries? The Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art (Centre A) is seeking an Executive Director to build on its accomplishments and lead its future development. Centre A was founded in 1999 in order to establish a major Canadian centre for contemporary Asian art. The organization has a mission to provide a platform for contemporary Asian art that engages, educates, stimulates a reflective experience and provokes critical thought.

Over the last 10 years Centre A has sustained an open yet critical approach to the possible meanings of Asia in relation to a wide range of social concerns and contexts. The centre produces exhibitions, performances, symposia, publications, residencies and educational programs. It collaborates actively with other arts organizations, locally and internationally. It promotes the work of young and emerging Canadian artists and exposes Vancouver to the work of leading artists from abroad. Maintaining high artistic, curatorial and scholarly standards, Centre A enjoys an international reputation for excellence and innovation.


The Tasks
Reporting to the Board, the Executive Director articulates a strong and cohesive vision for growth of an organization with a current budget of $350,000. Working closely with the Curator, this position is responsible for articulating and executing an artistic program of international caliber. The external and liaising aspects of the role mean that this position is integral in representing the organization to governments, funders (private and public), financial institutions, the media and corporate partners. The candidate must also have strong governance experience, supervising a staff of 3 in the operation of the gallery in addition to facilitating the work of the Board. Financial and Administrative management in addition to Fundraising and Capital Planning are integral aspects of the position.

The successful candidate will be a creative and innovative thinker with a broad range of talents including superior verbal and written communications skills, strong strategic planning and organizational ability, and excellent interpersonal skills essential to building community and energizing a diverse group of interested and influential individuals. This is an ideal position for a visionary and entrepreneurial arts administrator who thrives on collaboration with creative, passionate colleagues. This key role will be of interest to arts professionals with a passion for contemporary art, a creative vision and team-leading abilities. It presents the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the arts in Vancouver and beyond.
Your record of accomplishment includes:

  • A minimum of ten years progressively responsible experience in the cultural field, including at least five years in a leadership role
  • Experience and knowledge of gallery operating functions including outreach activities within the community at large
  • Strong record of fundraising including grant writing, donor relations and corporate sponsorship.
  • High level of proficiency in spoken and written English. Your strategic communications instincts are your most crucial assets, but you should also be an impeccable and fluid writer with a feel for a compelling turn of phase.
