July 1 - September 1
Picnic Opening, Friday, July 4

Toronto-based artist, Janet Morton, will mount a site-specific intervention titled, Thrive By, in the public area outside the Richmond Art Galleryís Minoru window. Morton will expand the notion of adornment and will extend the concept of apparel onto trees and architectural elements outside of the Gallery. She employs humour and familiar materials associated with comfort, domesticity and detail to articulate issues of human excess. The artist will be collaborating with Richmond City landscapers to integrate the gardens in front of the Galleryís Minoru window echoing colour and floral elements in her work. She will use hand knit and crocheted textiles to accentuate the natural and structural aspects of the public area, creating an unexpected encounter for passers-by.

Janet Morton has exhibited her work widely in Canada, the United States and Europe since receiving a Bachelor of Fine Art from York University in 1990. She has earned many awards for her work including the Canada Council Paris Studio Award and several Ontario Arts Council grants. This is her first solo exhibition in British Columbia.

Thrive By will be shown parallel to a two-person exhibition with Janet Morton and Evelyn Roth titled Material Obsessions at the Belkin Satellite Gallery (555 Hamilton Street, Vancouver). The opening reception will be held on July 7 from 8-10pm and there will be an artists talk the following day at 2pm.
