Message from Director/Curator |
| As you will have noticed, the Richmond Art Gallery was over the summer months. While we carried on our usual programs in alternate spaces; for instance, Thrive By, by Janet Morton, was installed in the garden outside the Galleryís Minoru window and senior Summer Camps were held at Britannia Heritage Shipyard, the gallery space itself has had a 'face lift' or perhaps a "floor lift" would be the appropriate term. That dirty, old stained carpet is gone. The newly polished cement floors give the space an aesthetic which is appropriate to a gallery dedicated to presenting the best of contemporary art.
And how wonderful to open the renewed space with three exhibitions in which light is integral to the work: June Yun's, Even birds choose trees to perch, Shima Iuchi's. Illuminations of Kamloops, and Charlotte Wall's, Boundless I and II. These luminous artworks look stunning in the updated environment. I hope you will be able to visit before the October 29th closing and see for yourself.

September 12 - November 20, 2006
Pierre Coupey is a local artist and writer who takes inspiration from his poetry and from landscape and incorporates it into his paintings and prints. He has exhibited in solo and group shows in Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, Dublin, Nagoya and Tokyo. His work - writing, printmaking, painting - has received numerous awards, grants and commissions, and is represented in private, corporate and public collections in Canada and abroad. Astrid Fox, The Aura of Blooms at Richmond City Hall
Flowers are a common subject often used in art. What is uncommon about Fox's approach is to take this beautiful and familiar subject and superimpose it onto various unfamiliar backgrounds. Her purpose is to create a tension between the foreground and the background, continuously exploring the effects different combinations produce. The Trading Event and Closing Party will be held on Wednesday, October 25th from 5-6:30pm, the public are invited to bring ATC's that they have made to trade with the exhibition participants and each other. Online Exhibitions |
| In Print: Ten Artists from the RAG Permanent Collection The Richmond Art Gallery recently launched it's second online exhibition. In Print: Ten Artists from the RAG Permanent Collection showcases works by Alan Wood, Pnina Granirer, Gabriele Ailey, Gu Xiong, Susan Gransby, Michael Bjornson, William Laing, Lilian Broca, Sylvia Tait and Bill Reid. Approximately one quarter of the Richmond Art Gallery's Permanent Collection is comprised of prints ranging from lithographs to monoprints, screen prints to etchings. The works span five decades with a concentration of work being created in the 1980s and 90s. Many of the artists represented in this collection are (or were) based in British Columbia, making the Richmond Art Gallery's collection of prints regionally relevant in documenting a range of the terrain that has been covered by printmakers in the province during this period. In addition to the images and didactic information in this exhibition, visitors are invited to explore printmaking with an introduction to printmaking processes, illustrated printmaking activities and a lesson plan for teachers using the exhibition as a resource. In Print is available in both French and English at http://www.richmondartgallery.org/inprint/inprint.php This project would not have been possible without funding from Canadian Heritage, Museum Assistance Program. |
