Looking Back

Artist Talk by artist Paul Mathieu
Paul Mathieu gave an illuminating talk to an enthusiastic audience during the last week of his exhibition, Making China in China. In addition to speaking about his work and his experience in China he included curious nuggets of information. For instance, in Jingdezhen, the town where the Imperial Kilns were established over a 1000 years ago, digging a hole for a new building will yield a 50 foot deep ceramic foundation. The enormity of this is not lost on Mathieu whose depth of exploration and understanding of ceramics appears to be as deep as the ceramic residue in the earth of Jingdezhen.

Arts For Life Conference
April 20, 2006
Sponsored by the Richmond School Board

The 2006 Arts for Life Conference was a wonderful day for over 100 Richmond secondary students. Students came to the RAG to hear talks by 8 different visual artists and participate in an Artist Trading Card art-making session for a full day of artistic inspiration. This year’s roster included Key Note speakers Carol Gigliotti and Gu Xiong, and artists Michael Abraham, Marc Bell, Vanessa Kwan, Amy Lockhart, Susanne Tabata, and Jane Wolsak. Thank you to all the Richmond Art Teachers, Richmond Art Gallery volunteers, student volunteers from London Secondary, the Richmond School Board, and the artist presenters who made this event so memorable!

Online Exhibitions

Phantasmagoria
The Richmond Art Gallery is pleased to announce the launch of its first online exhibition entitled Phantasmagoria. This exhibition was initiated as a part of the RAG’s celebration of its 25th anniversary (1980-2005). Phantasmagoria features works from the RAG’s Permanent Collection that have been selected by a group of students from Cambie Secondary School. Each student responded to the work they chose through a creative written passage. Artists featured in this exhibition include Lilian Broca, Taiga Chiba, Polly Faminow, Roy Green, William Laing, Patricia McBain, Cynthia J. Smith, Richard Tetrault and Margaret J. Wilkins.
Phantasmagoria is available in both French and English at http://www.richmondartgallery.org/phantas/index.php.
This project would not have been possible without funding from Canadian Heritage, Museum Assistance Program.
